Vegetation Survival in Green Roofs without Irrigation

نویسندگان

چکیده

The implementation of green roofs as sustainable urban drainage systems provides benefits for stormwater control and the environment is more encouraged. A model estimation probability vegetation survival without irrigation proposed. model, developed through a probabilistic analytical derivation procedure, can also consider effects chained rainfall events, need continuous simulation hydrological processes. equations be useful in design roofs, allowing to determine growing medium thickness terms an assumed risk withering dry periods. proposed able identify optimal medium, over which performances increased only with irrigation. Model were tested by application two case studies Italy. Comparison between probabilities cumulative frequencies from water content shows good agreement provide first confirmation reliability.

Positive effects of vegetation: urban heat island and green roofs.

This paper attempts to evaluate the positive effects of vegetation with a multi-scale approach: an urban and a building scale. Monitoring the urban heat island in four areas of New York City, we have found an average of 2 °C difference of temperatures between the most and the least vegetated areas, ascribable to the substitution of vegetation with man-made building materials. At micro-scale, we...

Cost-Effectiveness of Green Roofs

Life-cycle assessment was used to evaluate the widespread installation of green roofs in a typical urban mixed-use neighborhood. Market prices of materials, construction, energy conservation, storm-water management, and greenhouse gas GHG emission reductions were used to evaluate private and social costs and benefits. Results suggest green roofs are currently not cost effective on a private cos...

Evaluation of Energy Savings for Buildings with Green Roofs Having Different Vegetation

Thermal benefits of different green roof samples were analyzed and compared. Experimental data from ongoing green roof projects was used in a theoretical analysis of air-conditioning energy savings with different green roof applications. Thermal data was collected from a typical non-reflective (EPDM) roof membrane and model green roof systems with three types of growth media (lava, arkalyte, an...

Vegetation development on extensive vegetated green roofs: Influence of substrate composition, establishment method and species mix

Technology for establishment of vegetated roofs (green roofs) has developed rapidly over recent years but knowledge about how these systems will develop over time is still limited. This study investigates vegetation development on unfertilised thin extensive vegetated roofs during a 3-year period. The vegetation systems investigated were designed to be low maintenance and had a saturated weight...

Green Roofs in the Tropics Conserve Energy

Background: Concrete buildings on Guam are exceptionally strong but also accumulate large amounts of heat. In the tropical environment of Guam, where 24 h average temperature ranges from 28 to 29oC year round, air conditioning is used every day and continuously. Concrete roofs are often painted light colors, which make them more reflective and accumulate less heat. They are also suitable for es...
